“I’ve fought for this state investment for years, because I firmly believe the UB James Joyce Museum will attract visitors from around the world, and further strengthen the relationship between the United States and Ireland. “This funding is transformational for the preservation of Irish heritage here in Buffalo and all of New York State, and will allow the University at Buffalo’s extensive collection of James Joyce’s work to be truly celebrated,” Kennedy said. The collection highlights Buffalo’s rich Irish-American legacy. Tripathi, in regards to the formidable collection of archival pieces, which have been amassed since 1950. “Moving our magnificent James Joyce Collection to a home worthy of its renown has been a key goal for our scholarly environment, and doing so reaffirms the significance of this distinctive scholarly gem to our university, our broader community in Buffalo and Western New York, and our friends and colleagues around the world,” said President Satish K. It is this broad and comprehensive catalogue, and its new host museum, that will, according to UB, “attract a broad global audience to discover and experience the achievements of the renowned Irish author, widely recognized as the most influential literary figure of the 20th century.” The advent of a James Joyce Museum in Buffalo, is in line with the university’s possession of the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of materials by and related to author and poet James Joyce. This significant funding was secured thanks to the efforts of New York State Senator Tim Kennedy, with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul. Now, UB has announced* that a whopping $10 million in NYS funding has been allocated towards the building of the Museum. At the time, that was a very significant contribution, because it helped to open the door for additional funding.
It was back in April of 2022, when I wrote that the University at Buffalo Libraries received a $100,000 challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) toward the design of a new UB James Joyce Museum in Western New York.
